The project enhances—aiming to exaggerate—the ‘courtyard-house’ character of a summer residence from the sixties in the Mediterranean coast of Spain. A house that three sisters in their thirties have decided to share as a summer home. This renovated holiday house is a deliberately ambiguous habitat, between inside and outside, openly diverse, as wide and sunny as intimate and shady; offering coves, topographies, loggias and gardens, in a spatial continuum that intends to provide a landscape of vitality and delight.

Multiplicity of enclosures

The preexistence of a wall enclosure in the garden—which distinguished two areas of the surrounding patios, while connecting them by means of four arches—is echoed throughout the site. This strategy results in a gregarious and playful matrix of exterior and interior rooms, of different dimensions, character, light and temperature; all of them interconnected by both old and new arches.

Domestic opening

The pre-existing house was based on closed spatiality with segregated and predetermined uses, based on traditional domestic privacy. Against this, the new habitat opens—through a steel structure merged into window frames— a large chamber that includes living, dining, kitchen and loggia areas. Likewise, the pre-existing long corridor has been blurred: widely connected with the living area, the corridor has, in both ends, generous pivoting doors, providing spatial continuity with large versatile rooms of indeterminate function.

Steel thresholds

The façade openings are superimposed with different steel layers, mediating on the relationship between interior and exterior. On the outside, a perforated sheet forms a sliding gate that makes possible sleeping with the window open. Inside, rectangular folding window frames allows full exterior opening.

Mud Topographies

The manifold continuity of the whole has been emphasized by a beautiful hand-crafted tapestry of Valencian terracotta tiles. This pavement unifies garden and house, interior and exterior on the same topography; while it suggests difference and hierarchy through its pattern, acknowledging rooms and edges; building walkways, shelves, benches and wall claddings.

Vernacular thermodynamics

In this summer house, without air conditioning, it’s never too hot. Following ordinary construction methods, the existing pitched roof sits on top of a dense matrix of walls which provide a ventilated cavity while increasing greatly thermal inertia. This thermal comfort is improved with additional cross ventilation and sun protection. In the garden, hard surfaces have been reduced to increase greenery, aiming to improve atmospheric humidity and perceived ambient comfort.

Project
Bajet Giramé produces spatial concepts and built artefacts through the execution of architectural and urban projects, teaching, research, exhibitions and publications. Our work intends to unveil fresh and ambiguous relationships between infrastructure and appropriation, concreteness and uncertainty, vernacular and digital, ecology and poetics, uselessness and politics. We believe architecture shall perform as a catalyst of joyful unexpected possibilities.

Studio

Maria Giramé (1987) and Pau Bajet (1988) established Bajet Giramé in Barcelona in 2017, after a period of four years in which they both worked as architects for David Chipperfield Architects in London. The studio is a collaborative platform developing a wide range of projects together with a great diversity of partners, consultants, collaborators and clients. Current projects include 83 social dwelling units, an elderly residence and a district community centre for the Barcelona Council; a 2ha rural campsite near Ebre’s river delta; a 27 ha urban expansion for the municipality of Alcanar; as well as several retrofit projects for domestic and office spaces.

Research

Bajet Giramé combines professional practice with research and teaching in universities in Spain and the UK. We believe in the role of architectural design as a research tool to unveil new knowledge. Transdisciplinar and transscalar everyday spatial practices, that we carry out through housing commissions, exhibition curatorship, furniture design, teaching, essay writing, urban planning, or drawing on paper.

PhD ‘by design’

In 2015 Pau was awarded La Caixa Fellowship for Postgraduate Studies to fund a doctorate ‘by design,’ currently in its latest stages, supervised by Florian Beigel and Philip Christou, at The School of Art, Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University.

Teaching at ETSAB

Pau runs a Design Studio at the Housing & City unit at ETSAB (Barcelona School of Architecture, UPC), since 2017. This third-year course, consist of a project studio where undergraduate students develop urban and dwelling prototypes to enhance both civic life and domestic joyfulness.

Teaching at ETSALS

Maria is currently teaching a Construction Studio at ETSALS (School of Architecture La Salle). This studio for third-year undergraduate students, consists of a workshop where they develop a project in detail, exploring constructional thought, technique and representation awareness.

Teaching at MIAD

Pau is currently teaching, in partnership with architect María Langarita, the Social Logics Workshop at MIAD (Master in Integrated Architectural Design). In this workshop students explore fresh prototypes for living in common, based on large-scale civic supports open to human and non-human intersubjective forms of appropriation.
