Halfway up, along the “Pujada de Sant Martí” and looking through a magnificent stone threshold of a gothic house, one comes across a shaded courtyard. From a certain distance the space looks rather small to the naked eye. Its centre displays an intriguing object, and within it, a whole mysterious interplay of spring-flowers and sharpened geometries occur. As one steps closer, the courtyard feels amplified as unfolds its walls vertically though some stone-cut balustrades and up to a masterfully ornate timber soffit.
The unexpected presence of such object happens to be, in fact, another courtyard nested within the first one. A little precinct that reveals a never-ending flowerscape composed by myriad daffodils that expand towards an horizon which escapes the gaze.
The flower installation therefore sits within clearly recognisable setting: a courtyard within a courtyard. The shape of such object responds and reacts to the shape of its container. On one hand it sits in its exact gravitational centre, and despite presenting an apparently regular shape its outline is fully distorted pointing all of its sides to the four façades of the courtyard. Superiorly, the extruded rhomboid is cut in an angle revealing the nature of its content. This abstract shape can be similarly read in plan, elevation and perspective, always opening its core to the approaching visitor. Its inner planes are actual mirrors that multiply a rather small area fully stocked with white flowers. The angles of the object are all different constantly unleashing a wide range of reflections which the observer can grasp as it circles the object. The outer faces of the container are painted in dark pretending to be material less.
The white narcissus Ziva, eventually conform an ever-changing endless horizontal surface. Each of those narcissuses, as per Ovid’s myth, will be multiplied trapped within its own reflections, in a perpetual mirroring. The narcissus, aka a brief spring flower, gives its name to Girona’s Saint Patron, and does not represent here a “real nature” contrarily it aims to recall the representation of the human ego.
